M62 traffic: Huge 'multi-vehicle crash' sparks 90-minute delays

National Highways has said emergency services are at the scene of the crash.

Drivers on the M62 faced delays of up to 90 minutes this morning following a "multi-vehicle collision".

Two lanes on the eastbound side of the motorway near Warrington were closed, between junction eight for Burtonwood and junction nine for Warrington.

National Highways wrote on X: "*Delays have now exceeded 60 minutes* Lanes 3 and 4 (of 4) are closed on the #M62 eastbound between J8 (#Burtonwood) and J9 (#Warrington) due to a multi-vehicle collision.

"Emergency services are working on scene. Please allow plenty journey time if possible."

Traffic eases on M62

Traffic has eased on the M62 eastbound after the earlier crash.

Road expected to clear soon

According to National Highways, the road is expected to clear between 9.45am and 10am.

M62 crash has knock-on effect on traffic

Heavy traffic on the motorway is reportedly having a knock-on effect on traffic in Great Sankey and Warrington.

There are currently long delays on the A57 and Cromwell Avenue, according to the AA Roadwatch.

Queues are also extending to the M57 near Huyton.

Police confirm no reports of injuries after crash

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At around 6.45am on Tuesday 21 October, police were called to reports of a collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 8 and 9.

"Highways Officers , ambulance and fire attended and found there had been a collision involving five cars in lane 4.

"There are no reports of any injuries and recovery work is underway at the scene."

Road cleared and lanes opened

Recovery is complete and the road has been cleared. All lanes are now open following the crash.

Delays up to 90 minutes

Delays on the M62 have gone from 30 minutes to 90 minutes between 7.15am and 7.45am.

When will the road clear?

According to National Highways, emergency services are expected to be done between 9.15am and 9.30am, with a return to normal conditions expected soon after.

What we know so far

There has been a multi-vehicle crash on the M62 eastbound.

Lanes three and four of the road are shut between J8 and J9 while emergency crews work.

There are huge queues, with waits of over 90 minutes. Drivers are advised to allow longer journey times.
