A man died after a crash on the M60 in Greater Manchester on Thursday morning (September 25). The fatal collision took place clockwise between junction 8 for Carrington and junction 9 for Trafford Park shortly before 6am.

Greater Manchester Police said a gold Renault crashed into the central barrier and the driver, 62, died. The motorway was shut following the collision which has led to lengthy delays throughout the day.

Full police statement

Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers are appealing for information following a fatal collision this morning (Thursday 25 September, at 5:35am) on the M60 motorway, clockwise between Junction 8 for Carrington and Junction 9 for Trafford Park.

"A single vehicle, described as a gold Renault, is believed to have entered the motorway at Junction 8 and then collided with the central reservation.

"The driver of this vehicle 62 has since sadly died from his injuries.

"Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit continue their investigation and are asking for anyone with information to please come forward.

"This includes anyone who saw the vehicle driving before the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or have dash cam footage of the incident.

"You can contact the SCIU directly on 0161 856 4741, contact the police on our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 405 of 25/09/2025.

"Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Police launch investigation after fatal crash

Man dies in crash

It has been announced that a man died in the crash on the M60 on Thursday morning. 

Police say a gold Renault crashed into the central reservation. The driver, 62, was rushed to hospital but later died.

Lorry used to help police with traffic control

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, a lorry from Owens Group was used to help police control traffic after the crash.

The company said on social media: "Travel Update. There was an incident on the M60 near Manchester this morning.

"No Owens vehicles were involved. At the request of the police, one of our vehicles assisted with traffic control to help keep everyone safe.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected."

M60 being reopened but delays remain

The M60 is now being reopened. However, delays remain and motorists are being advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Police carrying out investigation work

Police are carrying out investigation work at the scene of the crash on the M60.

The motorway remains shut and there is no estimated time of reopening.

Stretch of M60 remains shut

A stretch of the M60 remains shut in Greater Manchester. The motorway is closed clockwise between junction 6 for Sale and junction 9 near Trafford Park.

New diversion

National Highways has issued a new diversion route for drivers affected by the M60 closure:

Leave M60 clockwise at Jct 6. At M60 Jct 6/A6144 Rbt, take first exit onto A6144 (Old Hall Road) WB and follow for 3.4km. At A6144/A56 Jct, turn right onto A56 (Washway Road) NB and follow for 2km. At A56/M60 Jct 7 Jct, follow signage for M60 - Carrington (A6144) At M60 Jct 8/A6144 Rbt, follow A6144 SB Carrington Spur for 4.0km. At A6144/B5158 Jct, turn left onto B5158 NB Flixton Road, follow the road round and then turn right on to the The B5213 Church Road Follow Chuch Road B5213 until the junction with the B5214 and Queen's Road, turn left on to the B5124 At B5158/B5214 (Davyhulme Circle) Rbt, follow B5158 EB Lostock Road for 1.2km. At B5158/M60 Jct 9 (Lostock Circle) Rbt, and rejoin M60 clockwise.

M4 reopens

Traffic Wales says that the M4 has reopened.

But the M60 remains shut between Junctions 6 and 9.

Things are expected to get back to normal between 2.15pm and 2.30pm.

National Highways says the M60 clockwise between junctions J6 and J9 is still closed.

This is after an RTC involving four vehicles.

The incident is now expected to clear between 7.30pm and 7.45pm.

There are currently delays of 20 minutes against expected traffic.

M4 still shut

Traffic Wales says the M4 is still closed westbound from J37 Pyle to J38 Margam.

This is "due to accident".

A lorry overturned on the motorway, causing delays.

M60 crash involved 4 vehicles

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said:

The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed clockwise between J6 (Sale) and J9 (near Trafford Park) due to a serious collision involving four cars.

Greater Manchester Police are working on scene and are currently leading the response to this closure.

Due to the nature of the incident, we are unable to provide an estimated re-opening time.

Other Greater Manchester roads very busy

The MEN reports that parts of Trafford are gridlocked this morning amid the M60 closure.

Roads such as the A56 and A6144 are very busy.

There is also slow traffic in other areas of the M60, near Swinton and Prestwich, as drivers use other parts of the ring road to avoid the closure.

National Highways says the M60 clockwise between junctions J6 and J9 is still closed due to a road traffic collision.

The incident is expected to clear between 3pm and 3.15pm, officials say.

There are currently delays of 50 minutes against expected traffic.

Driver taken to hospital

Greater Manchester Police has said that a car crashed into the central reservation between junctions nine and 10 on the M60 earlier this morning.

The driver was taken to hospital, and it is thought that they may have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

M60 still closed with one hour delays

National Highways says the M60 is still closed clockwise between junctions 6 and 9.

The incident is expected to clear between 1.45pm and 2pm.

There are currently delays of 1 hour against expected traffic, officials say.

Traffic Wales says the M4 Westbound from J37 Pyle to J38 Margam is closed "due to accident".

This is after it was announced around an hour ago that the eastbound lane had been re-opened.

10 minute delays

National Highways says there is congestion on the M60 anticlockwise between junctions J9 and J8

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 08.15am and 08.30am, officials said.

They added that there are currently delays of 10 minutes against expected traffic.

Slip closure

National Highways says the M60 clockwise entry slip at junction J8 is closed.

This is due to a road traffic collision

The event is expected to clear between 10am and 10.15am.

M4 update

Officials say the eastbound lane on the M4 has reopened.

Earlier, Traffic Wales said there had been a full road closure between J37 Pîl and J38 Margam westbound.

The authority added: "Road closed in both directions. Allow extra time to travel Updates to follow."

CCTV images have shown the situation on the M60 between Junctions 6 and 9.

In one section, one side of the motorway is empty, and there are queues on the other side.

50 minute delays

National Highways says the M60 is shut clockwise between junctions J6 and J9 due to a road traffic collision.

The incident is expected to clear between 11.30am and 11.45am.

Normal traffic conditions are expected at the same time, officials add.

There are currently delays of 50 minutes against expected traffic.

M60 update

An update by traffic monitoring service Inrix read earlier this morning: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M60 clockwise from J8 (Carrington) to J9 A5081 Park Way (Trafford Park).

"All traffic stopped around 06:10."

M4 crash – police update

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "We're at the scene of a serious collision on the M4 westbound just prior to junction 38.

"The road is currently closed from junction 37 onwards and from junction 38 eastbound so that emergency services can access the incident.

"It is expected to remain closed for some time; please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We're grateful for your patience."
