A large stretch of the M11 has been closed following a crash in the early hours of Wednesday. Drivers during morning rush hour were warned of delays of more than 90 minutes, with the National Highways reporting "severe disruption" on the M11 southbound between Junction 6 (M25) and Junction 4 (A406) following a "serious" overnight collision just after Junction 5 (Chigwell).
Essex Police said the incident was a single-vehicle collision, with no injuries reported and no arrests, while firefighters also attended the scene after the vehicle caught fire. All three running lanes were closed as they required resurfacing work, with traffic being managed via the hard shoulder. National Highways later said the road was being completely closed for repairs, adding it hoped the road would be reopened "for the evening peak".

Update from National Highways
The National Highways has given an update on the M11 southbound in Essex.
On X, it said: "We are now in the process of closing the M11 between J6 and J4 to allow resurfacing works to be carried out safely."
In response to a question asking how long the stretch of busy motorway would be shut, National Highways said: "We're hoping to have the resurfacing complete and the road reopened for the evening peak."
Delays on M11 southbound remain
The National Highways says delays are persisting on the M11 southbound in Essex.
In an update on X, it said: The #M11 southbound remains heavily affected between J6 (#M25) and J4 (#A406) following an overnight collision just after J5 (#Chigwell).
"The plan is to close the M11 between J6 and J4 later this morning to allow resurfacing works to be carried out."
Vehicle was '100% alight'
We've been hearing from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service which confirmed it attended a vehicle fire on the M11 southbound in the early hours of this morning.
A spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on the M11 southbound between Junction 5 and Junction 4 at 2.10am today.
"On arrival, crews reported one vehicle was 100% alight. Firefighters worked swiftly to extinguish the fire and left the scene at 3.56am."
Essex Police also confirmed to the Express no injuries have been reported and no arrests.
The force left the scene with National Highways for repairs.
Road surface in 'poor condition'
Traffic monitoring system INRIX suggests the road surface on the delay-hit section of the M11 southbound is in a "poor condition".
National Highways has confirmed specialist contractors are on the scene carrying out "complex" repair and resurfacing work to enable the lanes to reopen as soon as possible.
All three lanes between Junction 6 and Junction 4 are currently shut, with traffic being released on the hard shoulder.
