£1m bill for Tube killing
TAXPAYERS face a £1million bill after European judges decided to prosecute Britain over the death of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes.
The European Court of Human Rights has taken up the case after complaints by his cousin Patricia Da Silva.
The Government is being asked to prove it did not breach the Convention on Human Rights. The taxpayer will fund compensation.
De Menezes, 27, was shot dead at London’s Stockwell Tube station on July 22, 2005 by police who mistook the electrician for a suicide bomber. The move has infuriated police and lawyers who believe the case has already been properly investigated.
