Perth fire: 'Terrible' blaze rips through multi-storey building in UK city

Firefighters are battling a blaze at a multi-storey building in Perth that broke out in the early hours of Saturday.
Crews were called to the junction of Scott Street and South Street at around 1.30am and remain at the scene.
Police Scotland said officers have closed off Scott Street, South Street and Canal Street.
The force urged people to avoid the area.
First Minister John Swinney, the MSP for Perthshire North, wrote on social media: “Very concerned to hear of a fire in Scott Street, Perth. Hope everyone is safe.”

Roads starting to reopen
Police Scotland Tayside said on X: "Canal Street has since reopened. Scott Street and South Street remain closed."
Unclear if any casualties
It remains unclear if any casualties were sustained in this morning's fire.
The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
'I just couldn't get over the scale of it'
Another told The Courier: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was a huge blaze, with what looked like an entire block of flats on fire.
“I could tell from the height it was the roof space, and it looked right in the middle of the city centre.
“I could hear sirens and saw more blue lights heading into town as additional emergency services arrived.
“The flames were reaching pretty high and the smoke was billowing straight up – it would have been visible from right across Perth.
“I just couldn’t get over the scale of the fire and really hope everyone got out before it spread.”
'People screaming' heard by neighbours
According to The Courier, a neighbour who lived in the opposite building, Slater Perera, said they were able to feel the heat from the blaze and heard people screaming.
She said: "We heard people screaming at around 1.45am and we saw the huge flames from our bedroom window.
"We literally felt the heat from the fire and called 999.
“I live in Loretto House and tried to wake everyone up at my flats to alert them to what was going on.
“We arrived at a friend’s’ flat nearby for shelter.”
'Fire extinguished' - Police statement
Posting on X, Police Scotland Tayside said that officers were called in the early hours of this morning and that the fire is now extinguished.
They said: "Emergency services remain at the scene of a serious fire on Scott Street in Perth.
"Officers were called around 1.50am on Saturday, 14 June, 2025.
"The fire has been extinguished however a multi-agency response is ongoing.
"A number of properties have been evacuated. Scott Street, South Street and Canal Street are closed.
"Drivers and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area."
Fire Service statement
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.47am on Saturday 14 June, to reports of a dwelling fire at Scott Street, Perth.
“Operations Control initially mobilised three appliances to the scene and on arrival firefighters found the roof well alight on the top-floor of a four-storey residential building.
“A further nine appliances were requested to support the incident and a total of 12 appliances are now in attendance.
“Firefighters remain on scene as they work hard to extinguish the fire affecting a four-storey residential property.”
Local MP hopes 'everyone is safe'
Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and Kinross-shire, added: “Hearing reports of a terrible fire in Scott Street in Perth overnight. Hope everyone is safe.”
