Tesco removes popular Clubcard service for shoppers after 'difficult decision'
Tesco said the move aims to bring customers more "value and convenience".
From today, Tesco has discontinued a popular feature from its app that allowed customers to pay for their shopping and collect Clubcard points in one easy step. The "Pay in-store" option, which enabled shoppers to scan a QR code to make payments and simultaneously earn Clubcard points, will no longer be available.
Tesco explained that removing the feature was driven by the increasing use of alternative payment methods. From now on, customers must scan their Clubcard separately from their payment method during transactions. This change takes effect from Friday, March 7, 2025. In an email sent to shoppers announcing the change, Tesco said: "To ensure we're able to keep bringing you the best value and convenience, we've taken the difficult decision to remove the pay in-sore feature, formally known as Tesco Pay+, from the Tesco app.
"Next time you're in store, you'll need to pay separately after scanning your Clubcard."
Those who opt to store their digital Clubcard on their Apple or Google wallet can now collect points and complete payments with just two taps, a slight change from the single tap required when using the Pay in-store feature.
Some customers who are unhappy with the decision have taken to social media to voice their complaints. One user said: "I was so gutted when I saw this email, meant I didn't have to carry my physical card and was so handy."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We regularly review the payment options available to our customers.
"It's still quick and easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or adding it to your Apple or Google wallet."
