Tucked away in Margate's Old Kent Market is a tiny bar with a big reputation.

The Little Prince, as it's aptly named, could be set to be oficially recognised as the smallest pub in Britain, accommodating only about six patrons at a time.

The compact establishment, measuring just 6.6ft by 11ft, was transformed from a disused sushi bar into a miniature marvel by market owner Andy Barrett in August 2016.

Named after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's renowned children's book, the bar has been a constant presence since its opening and recently underwent management changes.

Stewart Dobson and Bren West, who operate BB's Cafe and Bar - which is situated in a double-decker bus in the Old Kent Market - along with Mark and Tracy Breen of the nearby Old Kent Coffee Shop, have now assumed control of The Little Prince.

Despite its diminutive size, the pub is not officially recognised as the UK's smallest - that honour currently goes to The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds, reports KentLive. However, Mr Dobson hopes to change this soon.

"We've just applied to the Guinness Book of Records to get it made official," he said. "It's a little smaller than The Nutshell, we think they've sort of conceded that now."

Despite its compact size, Mr Dobson, the new manager of The Little Prince, revealed that the bar attracts a diverse range of customers.

"It's very widespread, you get all the locals here as well as a lot of DFLs," he said.

DLF is short for 'down from London' - a term used by people in Kent for people who've moved out of the big smoke for the relative peace and quiet of the leafy south east.

When asked about potential changes to the popular pub, Mr Dobson expressed a desire to maintain its existing charm.

"We have only just got our hands on it so we have not thought exactly what we want to do," he said. "It's quite a popular bar as it is, so it would be silly to change it too much. We will give it until next year and then decide if we want to make any big changes."

He added that any significant alterations would be considered next year.

One notable change already implemented by the new management is extended opening hours; the bar is now open every day of the week - from 11am until 5pm Monday and Tuesday, and from 11am until 11pm the rest of the week.

Stewart added he hoped welcoming staff and excellent selection of drinks will continue to draw in patrons.

"It's friendly locals who are happy to have a chat and happy to tell you what's on," he said. "And, of course, friendly staff and a great selection of beers, spirits and other drinks."
