M11 traffic live: Police incident sparks chaos on major UK motorway as air ambulance lands

People have been spotted outside their vehicles on the M11 after a police incident forced the closure of the southbound carriageway.

Drivers have been spotted outside of their vehicles after a police incident on the M11 has forced the southbound carriageway to close.

An air ambulance has been spotted at the scene between Junctions 8 and 7A (Stansted and Harlow), with officials warning that the road could be closed for some time. A diversion route is in place.

A post on the National Highways website reads: "The M11 is closed southbound between J8 (Stansted) and J7A (Harlow) due to an ongoing Essex police led incident. The northbound is carriageway is currently held to allow the air ambulance to land at the scene. 

"All emergency services are working at the scene with Essex police leading the response. Traffic Officers and contractors are on scene and assisting with strategic closures on the approach. 

"At this stage it is not known how long the carriageway will be closed for. Plans are being made to clear the traffic caught within the closure, please await instructions from officers on scene."

Traffic released on Northbound Carriageway

Traffic has now been released on the northbound carriageway, but motorists can still expect delays of up to 60 minutes.

Normal traffic conditions to resume

Nationla Highways said:

Time To Clear : The event is expected to clear between 12:30 and 12:45 on 11 October 2024Return To Normal : Normal traffic conditions are expected between 12:00 and 12:15 on 11 October 2024

Carriageway closed due to 'serious collision'

A spokesperson from Essex Police said: "M11 is currently closed in both directions between junctions 7 and 8 due to a serious collision.

"This is also impacting slip roads around Stansted Airport and the surrounding areas.

"Emergency services are working at the scene. Please avoid the area.

"We appreciate the inconvenience this will cause. We will issue an update as soon as we practically can.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Severe delays of 65 mins

According to an AA update at 8:28am, traffic is delayed by over an hour.

They said: "Severe delays of 65 minutes and delays increasing on M11 Northbound between J7A A1025 (Harlow North) and J8A. Average speed five mph."

Diversion routes in place

Diversion routes have been implemented due to heavy traffic.

Road users are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs: Exit at J8 Southbound onto the A120 west to Little Hadham. Continue on the A120 through Little Hadham and Standon to the A120/A10 roundabout. At the roundabout take the first exit onto the A10 south. Continue on the A10 through Colliers End, High Cross, Thundridge and Ware to the  A10/A414(Harlow) roundabout. At the A10/A414 roundabout take the first exit onto the A414 east to Harlow. Continue on the A414 through Harlow and rejoin the M11 at junction 7.
