Half of council public toilets available in a picturesque corner of the county are set to be closed as a cash-strapped authority tries to make savings.

Conwy County Borough Council has announced it has made the "difficult decision" to close 20 toilets potentially leaving visitors to the pretty region of North Wales caught short.

Among those slated for closure are toilets on Colwyn Bay promenade, opposite Porth Eirias. Penmaenmawr promenade is also losing its facility near the yacht club.

A number of toilets earmarked for closure on September 4 are already out of action having yet to be repaired from "repeated vandalism".

In a statement to Express.co.uk Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Transport and Facilities said: “Every Council service has had to find significant financial savings for 2024/25. As part of this, we have reviewed options for public toilets.

"We no longer have budget to subsidise public toilets, so we have to recoup all running costs from paid-for facilities.

“Closing toilets is a difficult decision for us to make. We have considered how much facilities get used, where there are other toilets available nearby, and how often facilities are vandalised and the ongoing repair costs.”

Conwy Council is not controlled by any of the main UK parties, with the Conwy First Independent Group holding the most councillor wards.

Conwy Council added that 21 public toilet facilities will remain open across the county, some on a seasonal basis from Easter to the first week of September.

It said 19 toilets in council buildings will be available for everyone to use, alongside toilets in businesses signed up to the council’s community toilet scheme.

Along with toilets in businesses signed up to the council’s community toilet scheme, it means the number of facilities in the county now totals 47, down from 66.
