M6 traffic: Huge delays on major motorway as 'seriously injured' man rushed to care

There were huge delays on one of the UK's busiest motorways due to a crash, with an air ambulance being rushed to the scene.

There were huge delays on the M6 in Lancashire after a "serious crash" on Monday.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police told Express.co.uk:

Lancashire Police told Express.co.uk: "We received a report of a collision involving one vehicle between junction 32 and 33 of the M6 at around 2pm on July 22. A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Four other people also suffered injuries and have been taken to hospital. The motorway is closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 and we will bring you an update when we’re able to.

"If you have any footage or information that can assist our enquiries, please contact 101 quoting log 0814 of July 22."

All lanes reopened

All lanes have now reopened on the M6, according to Preston Police.

Normal traffic conditions expected between 10.30 and 10.45pm

Traffic conditions are now further worsened, as normal traffic is expected to return sometime between 10.30pm and 10.45pm J33 and J32 on the M6, according to National Highways.

Time of carriageway reopening still unknown

“No time has been given when the carriageway will reopen", a spokesperson of National Highways said on X. "Trapped traffic is currently be released by emergency services.”

More delays as traffic expected back to normal after 9.30 pm

National Highways has extended the delays, with normal traffic conditions now not expected until between 9.30pm and 9.45pm between junctions J33 and J32 on the M6.

Normal traffic conditions expected between 6.45 and 7pm

Normal traffic conditions are not expected until between 6.45pm and 7pm, according to National Highways.

Delays of up to two hours as countless drivers stranded

According to National Highways, there are currently delays of two hours against expected traffic on the M6.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 4 and 4.15pm later today.

National Highways releases statement

National Highways has released a statment about the collision.

It reads: "Following a serious collision on the M6 southbound in Lancashire a full closure has been implemented from J32 near Galgate to allow emergency services to work at scene.

"North West Air Ambulance are currently en route and it's expected that the northbound carriageway will be stopped when they arrive to enable them to land.

"Numerous National Highways Traffic Officers have been dispatched and are en route to assist Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service in their response to this collision."

Five individuals taken to hospital

Lancashire Police told Express.co.uk:

Medical helicopter at the scene

An X user stuck on the M6 has shared a picture showing a helicopter flying onto the scene of the collision.

"Major incident closing M6 north and southbound near Bilsborrow, medical helicopter now moving in", the caption read.

Lancashire police gives update

"We anticipate this will be closed for some time", Lancashire Police said.

"Please avoid the area and use an alternative route where possible.

"We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience."

An X user has shared the endless barrage of cars stopped due to the collision, tweeting : "lil bit stuck on the M6".

Diversion route announced

To avoid the affected area, exit the M6 at Junction 33 (Lancaster South).

At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A6 towards Garstang, Blackpool, and Fleetwood. Continue southbound on the A6 through Garstang, Bilsborrow, Barton, and Broughton until you reach Junction 1 of the M55 (Broughton).

At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the M55 towards Birmingham. Proceed on the M55 to Junction 32 of the M6, then head south towards Birmingham.
