M25 traffic: Chaos on major UK motorway as crash sparks 90-minute rush hour queues

A crash involving a lorry and a van sparked huge delays on a stretch of major UK motorway during Monday morning rush-hour.

A crash involving a lorry and van on the M25 caused travel chaos during rush-hour on Monday morning.

Emergency services have rushed to scene on the stretch of the major UK motorway in Buckinghamshire on July 22.

The vehicles involved in the incident were recovered, but motorists faced 90 minutes of delays for several hours, with seven miles of congestion. 

A post on the National Highways website at the time read: "All lanes are now open on the M25 anti-clockwise between J17 Rickmansworth and J16 M40 following the earlier collision

"Delays of 90 minutes and approximately seven miles of congestion remain on approach, please allow extra time for your journey's if travelling through the area this morning."

All lanes now open after crash, but delays of 90 minutes remain

National Highways said: "All lanes are now open on the M25 anti-clockwise between J17 Rickmansworth and J16 M40 following the earlier collision

"Delays of 90 minutes and approximately seven miles of congestion remain on approach, please allow extra time for your journey's if travelling through the area this morning."

Drivers advised to check their route because of significant delays

Drivers thinking of using the stretch of the M25 anti-clockwise between J17 Rickmansworth and J16 M40 are being advised to check their route this morning.

Substantial delays of 90 minutes are affected the whole area south of Watford on the major motorway.

All vehicles now recovered from the crash scene but lanes remain closed

National Highways said: "All vehicles recovered on the M25 anti-clockwise between J17 Rickmansworth and J16, M40

"Three lanes (of 4) remain closed with National highways service providers working to clear a spillage.

"Delays of 90 minutes and seven miles of congestion on approach."

What we know so far

Three lanes of the southbound, anti-clockwise, M25 were closed after a crash involving several vehicles around 7am this morning. 

Just one lane of the four has been able to be kept open and lastest information suggests seven miles of congestion heading towards the scene and delays to journeys of an hour-and-a-half. 

National Highways said a lorry had been removed from the highway but images showed a stricken van remained in the road.

In a latest post on X about the delays, National Highways said: "Lorry recovered on the M25 anti-clockwise between J17 Rickmansworth and J16 M40.

"Recovery agents continue to work at scene to recover the van involved with three lanes (of 4) closed to facilitate.

"Delays of 90 minutes and seven miles of congestion on approach."

A map of the area affected by today's incident shows red lines of congestion filling the M25 stretching almost all the way up to Watford. 

National Highways said at least five miles of congestion could be expected and 45-minute delays since the collision involving a lorry and a van this morning.
