Probe after three men escape from medium secure ward at mental health hospital

Police issued an urgent appeal to the public for help in locating two of the men on Saturday, after a third had been located at an residential address nearby within three hours of the break out of the Springfield Hospital in Tooting, south London.

NHS bosses will probe how three men detained under the Mental Health Act were able to break out of detention at a hospital.

Police issued an urgent appeal to the public for help in locating two of the men on Saturday, after a third had been located at an residential address nearby within three hours of the break out of the Springfield Hospital in Tooting, south London.

The men were able to break a glass door at the hospital, run by South West London and St Georges NHS Mental Health Trust, in Glenburnie Road, Tooting at around 10.10pm on Friday.

The public were warned not to approach the pair.

An NHS source, who works in mental health services, said: "This will have classed as a serious incident within the trust and a formal investigation will have to be carried out into how the escape happened so they can identify ways to try to prevent such an event happening again."

Ramon Martin, 31, whose arm was injured by the broken glass, requiring medical attention, was found on Saturday in the Clapham Junction area after the appeal was launched.

The Met Police confirmed today that he third man Adil Maxamed, 20, was located yesterday afternoon, Sunday, 21 July in Earlsfield, south London, and was returned to the hospital.

Detective Inspector Jack Lyle from the South West Command Unit said: “Thanks to a concerted effort, both by police and partner agencies, all three men have been located and returned to the hospital. I would also like to thank the public for their vigilance and assistance following our public appeals.”

After the breakout, Maxamed, who has links to Kingston, and Martin, with links in Battersea, entered Tooting Bec station at 10.35pm boarded a Northern Line train.

A spokesperson for South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust said: "An internal investigation started today, with support being provided to patients, families and staff in response to this incident."
