A horrifying crash on a major A road has claimed the lives of two children and four adults today.

The horror smash on the A61 between Wakefield and Barnsley was a catastrophic incident that involved an utterly devastating head-on crash involving a Ford Focus and a motorbike this afternoon. The carnage was witnessed at the spot between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield with initial reports of arriving around 3.54 pm, as confirmed by West Yorkshire Police.

Killed at the harrowing scene were four passengers from the car - a man, a woman, and two young kids, a boy and a girl. Tragically, the pair aboard the motorcycle, another man and a woman, also perished in the gruesome collision.

In the aftermath of the accident, West Yorkshire Police conveyed their statement with a sombre tone, detailing: "Six people, including four adults and two children, have died in a collision between Wakefield and Barnsley this afternoon (21/7)."

The force further clarified: "The collision, which involved two vehicles, happened on the A61 Barnsley Road between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield."

They said the earliest calls they received about the dire event concerning a Ford Focus and a motorcycle were made at 3.54pm.

In a tragic declaration, they remarked: "A motorcyclist and pillion passenger, one male and one female, were confirmed dead at the scene. An adult male and female, and two children, one male and one female, who were travelling in the car, were also confirmed dead at the scene."

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Superintendent Alan Travis, from Wakefield District Police, commented, "This is an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives."

The A61 is a trunk road which runs from Thirsk, North Yorkshire in the north and Derby in the south. This particular stretch of road is a rural connection between West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.
