Second home ownership experienced a boom throughout the UK as people realised they could be a highly profitable investment, as well as convenient for weekends away.

They began to pop up in the UK's tourism hotspots such as Devon and Cornwall, transforming the housing market as well as bringing in even more visitors to these areas.

In the wake of this, the areas of the UK with the greatest shares of second homes have been revealed, with four out of 10 of them being in the same region.

According to data from Hamptons and ONS, Wales takes the top spot, as well as spots five, eight, and nine.

With another entry for North Wales, the number eight spot goes to Wrexham.

Unlike all the other local authorities on this list, Wrexham is not near a beach, so it may be a surprise to see it make the top 10.

This is the lowest average price of any second home hotspot on the list, but despite this, the North Wales city still saw saw an annual price decrease of 2.1 percent - the second biggest drop on this list.
