DEPRAVED serial killer and rapist Levi Bellfield was able to have sex with a prison warden inside a high security prison that holds some of the most dangerous criminals in the country, a new book claims.

Bellfield confessed to a female penpal to having sex with the woman who bedded several other serious criminals in HMP Wakefield, known as "Monster Mansion," it is alleged.

The prison has also housed the likes of Soham child killer Ian Huntley, Britain's most prolific serial killer Harold Shipman and Charles Bronson, the country's longest serving prisoner.

The book was written by Jonathan Levi and Emma French, the team behind Sunday Times bestseller Inside Broadmoor.

It charts the notorious prison's history and inmates and was written following interviews with prison staff, experts, journalists, former inmates and prisoner pen pals, including an unnamed woman who wrote to Bellfield and others behind bars.

Bellfield, 56, is serving two whole life orders for killing 13-year-old Milly Dowler, Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.

Harold-Shipman

Comparing Wakefield to other prisons, his pen pal said: "Wakefield from what Levi said is much bigger, therefore they got away with more stuff, as not enough staff and really, really long corridors.

"One female staff member... she went round having sex with multiple inmates including Levi, but then she settled down to one and got caught and sacked."

The book also claims that "Dr Death" Shipman acted as an informal GP to fellow inmates in Wakefield.

In January 2000 Shipman was found guilty of the murders of 15 of his patients by lethal injection in Hyde, Greater Manchester, but his true tally is estimated at around 250.

In 2004 the Ministry of Justice insisted that reviews found Shipman never gave medical advice to other patients and just two minor incidents of concern were identified when he had pushed two inmates in wheelchairs.

However, former prison officer Martin Baker told the book author's he often interacted with Shipman's "new patients" in the prison gym who often told him "Harold Shipman says I’ve got a so-and-so!".

Ian-Huntley

Colin-Ireland

He added that "prisoners went to him for advice, medical matters" which annoyed the prison's medical officer, as he would end up arguing with inmates about the medication they should be on if Shipman advised differently.

Shipman used a 15-minute window between prison checks to use bed sheets to hang himself on January 13 2004.

A 2005 review concluded the prison staff could not have predicted or prevented his death and that Shipman committed suicide before reaching 60, so that his wife would benefit from his full pension.

Yet the book reveals new claims that at least one prison officer and one probation officer were told by Shipman of his plan to commit suicide and for that reason.

Soham child killer Ian Huntley made three attempts to take his own life and huge amounts of money was devoted to preventing him, with a 24-hour watch.

Former prison officer Pete Wightman said: "When he were at Wakefield Dave Thompson, Governor at the time, was told that if Ian Huntley committed suicide at Wakefield, he would lose his job.

"He was so much in the public eye, it would be a huge public spectacle if he died."

Roy-Whiting

He added that Huntley cringes when he sees news reports of himself on TV and other staff described him as a "wet lettuce" full of self pity who constantly whined.

Remarkably, 6ft 3in Colin Ireland, "the Gay Slayer", who murdered five men over four months in 1993, was described by one former prisoner as a "gentle giant" by a former prisoner, but with brutal breath.

Until his death in 2012, he spent time with other notorious criminals in part of the prison making braille items for unwitting customers of the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

There, he would tell sick jokes, including that he and "Black cab rapist" John Worboys would soon be released for him to go on another killing spree with the latter as his driver.

Serial killer Robert Maudsley, who left a spoon in a dead inmate's brain after murdering him, likes to spend his time in solitary confinement watching soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

While child sex killer Roy Whiting, who kidnapped and murdered Sarah Payne in July 2000, is so despised, even in the Monster Mansion, he will probably be murdered in jail, according to the book.

It said due to frequent attacks, he only comes out of his cell to work with a sewing machine then returns and stays in there chain smoking.

Charles-Bronson

Charles Bronson moans and whines like a spoilt child when he doesn't get his own way, according to the book.

He is also in solitary confinement partially for his own protection due to years of "UK's toughest prisoner" claims making him a target, it claims.

During his time at Wakefield the book said he had nice furniture, TV, DVDs and an XBox, luxury showers and music playing in the gym, a TV, DVDs and an XBox.

Jeremy Bamber is seen by most other inmates as guilty and annoyed by his perpetual innocence campaign which has gained supporters on the outside. He is said to be very manipulative and controlling, arrogant and believes he is above other prisoners.

Other lags goad him about "messing up" by leaving a silencer at the scene as his schizophrenic sister who he blamed could not have shot herself with it on.

Former Lost Prophets singer paedophile Ian Watkins has had to pay thousands of pounds for protection from gangsters also holed up in Wakefield due to the amount of attacks planned on him, it is claimed.

His last stabbing in August was because he was told to pay £900 for £150 worth of spice and refused so got a sharpened toothbrush in his side. He still gets lots of fan mail from women despite his sick crimes against women and children.

INSIDE WAKEFIELD PRISON: Life Behind Bars in the Monster Mansion published by John Blake is out on Thursday, June 20.
