A rollercoaster in a favourite UK theme park has closed following "unforeseen circumstances", leaving bosses unable to confirm exactly when it will reopen.

Thorpe Park billed its formerly upcoming Hyperia rollercoaster as the "tallest and fastest" in the country, boasting it could exceed speeds of 80mph while taking rides 72 metres high.

The park's newest ride opened on Friday but was forced to shut after it ran for just one day.

Bosses suddenly announced that they were shutting the ride over the weekend, with a statement detailing their move released on Tuesday.

And the hotly anticipated new rollercoaster will not be rideable again until early next month.

Announcing the news on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Thorpe Park said that "despite our best efforts", the ride wouldn't open again until June.

They said: "Despite our best efforts, we are unable to commit to reopening Hyperia before Saturday 8th June.

"We will continue to do everything in our power to open the ride earlier and will ensure all the latest updates are provided via our socials and website.

The spokesperson added: "We are really sorry for the disappointment we know this will cause."

They would not further detail the reasons behind the shock closure but told a social media user that the ride had gone through "rigorous safety checks" before it opened last week.

The spokesperson added that staff were working hard to ensure Hyperia would be "back into full flight soon".

Anyone affected by the closures will be able to rebook a place on the ride before it reopens.

Thorpe Park visitors who had pre-booked a visit up to June 7 can change their booking online.

And anyone who visited on Saturday - when the ride was unexpectedly closed - is entitled to a free day return.

Reports from opening day suggested that queues for the roller coaster were huge, with approximately five hours of wait time in store for those hoping to brave the ride.
