Beautiful little city named best in UK as it beats Durham and Princess Kate favourite
It's famous for being one of Britain's smallest cities - but what it lacks in population it gains in other areas say fans.
Great things come in small packages - and that certainly seems to be the case for the tiny Somerset city of Wells.
Known for being one of the smallest cities in the UK, it has now been ranked as Britain’s best place for a staycation break by readers of Which? magazine.
The results come from a survey of almost 4,000 Which? members who were asked about their experiences visiting UK cities and towns in the past two years - with locations rated on accommodation, food and drink, cultural sights and tourist attractions.
Ease of getting around, lack of crowds and value for money were also part of the voting criteria.
Wells was given a score of 86 percent. The Somerset city is also the highest-scoring location in the survey overall.
Durham and St Andrews - where Prince William and Princess Kate met - rank joint second in the small city category.
Wells’ city status comes from its historical cathedral, finalised in 1974 when Queen Elizabeth II confirmed its city status. It has a teeny, tiny population of around 12,000.
According to the consumer group, top tourist attractions there included the cathedral, Bishop's Palace and Vicar's Close.
It’s a city filled with history, an abundance of local activities, nearby landmarks and accessible transport links.
Wells city councillor, Sarah Powell, recently told Express.co.uk: “There’s a really good community here, it’s small enough for people to know each other well.

“There are plenty of things to see and experience like the cathedral as well as food, comedy and theatre festivals.
“It’s also great for those who like nature, there’s lots of country walks so for people who like the outdoors it’s just a great place to live.”
Those who have visited the city have shared their views about the top tourist attraction - its magnificent cathedral - on travel review website Tripadvisor.
One said: “The prettiest cathedral I have ever seen.”
Another said: “A stunning cathedral in the heart of Wells.
They added: “The amenities for the ‘older’ generation were good, lots of pretty swans swimming in the moat.
“We look forward to visiting again and hopefully this time we will have longer to explore the Wells’ shops.”
