England features heavily on the list of the country's happiest communities.

Britain's happiest towns have been named following new research delving into the features that make their communities the best place in which to live.

Rightmove has developed a Happy at Home Index that ranks parts of the country based on how satisfied locals feel.

The latest iteration of the index - now in its 12th year - was compiled using the opinions of 26,000 people.

Each person quizzed by the firm hailed from a British town, city, or village, and they revealed "the things that are the most important to them" about their communities.

The results broadly show that most of the country's happiest spots are smaller towns and villages - with one notable exception.

Hexham

10. The 10th happiest community in the UK Hexham, the Northumberland town famous for its greenery and local history.

The market town is known as the "Heart of Hadrian's Wall" and is home to just 10,941 people as of 2021.

Visitors can find grand buildings like Hexham Abbey scattered across the quintessentially British community and a friendly local population.

St Ives, Cornwall

9. St Ives, one of Cornwall's Crown Jewels, is a stunning seaside town home to just 5,409, but it is far from quiet.

The town is formed by clusters of homes - each one more unique than the other - huddled in the English county's rolling countryside and surrounded by blue waters.

Its envious placement means that, while relatively few people live there, it can become especially busy - especially during the summer - with people arriving to lounge on the beach or experience local culture at Tate St Ives.

Kensington and Chelsea

8. Kensington and Chelsea is among London's richest boroughs, making it no surprise entry on RightMove's list.

In 2017, it was estimated that residents earn roughly £123,000 each, and more recent data suggests they live in homes that, on average, cost £1,728,191.

Local wealth aside, the riverside borough is also home to many of London's museums and plush eateries, including the Natural History and Science Museums and stunning pub the Churchill Arms.

Hemel Hempstead

7. Hemel Hempstead is a larger town of nearly 100,000 in Hertfordshire, just a couple of dozen miles outside London.

The area is naturally crammed with people who commute to the capital, with local homes costing roughly £250,000, almost a third of those in the city.

Otherwise, Hemel Hempstead has a booming local economy, and its residents are comparatively long-lived.

Skipton

6. Skipton is a historic market town in North Yorkshire that has long been recognised as one of the UK's happiest places to live.

The town is the gateway to the picturesque Yorkshire Dales - rated one of the country's best places for walking - and famed for its natural beauty.

Locals live alongside a 900-year-old castle and on cobbled streets, with some residents living in boats on the Eller Beck, the river that rolls gently through the town.
