Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil founder mistakes Alan Partridge for a real person
The campaigner took to Twitter to criticise the fictional TV presenter's comments in a Guardian interview describing him as a "bystander" on the climate crisis.
The founder of Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion appears to have mistaken Alan Partridge for a real person after posting a furious tweet calling the fictional TV presenter a "bystander" on climate change.
Roger Hallam took to Twitter following a Guardian interview with Steve Coogan in the role of Alan Partridge, where the character said he was "already about 70 percent vegan".
In the light-hearted piece, Partridge said his diet was made up of "potatoes, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower and beef", which he added was "almost entirely vegan".
However, Hallam did not see the funny side or seem to notice that the quotes were in fact fictional, blasting the TV and film character and comparing his comments to those made by Jimmy Saville in the 1980s "about liking young girls".
His Twitter post read: "In a decade's time, when the next generation comes of age, overwhelmed with the stinking mass death of climate collapse, knowingly created by the bystanders of our generation. They will feel the same disgust about comments like this as we do about Jimmy Saville's jokes in the 1980s about liking young girls.
"And we will sit there crippled with guilt."
Many followers were quick to point out Hallam's mistake, while others found his comparison to Saville bizarre.
One commenter said: "Oh my god, it's something that the character of Alan Partridge would say. He's not real he's a character, hello?"

Another added: "You have not just compared eating meat with being a literal nonce?"
Elsewhere in the Guardian interview, Partridge praised Nando's for also being "70 percent vegan".
He said: "You've got your chips, your macho peas, your corn on the cob – show me a single thing on that plate that’s come from an animal. You can't.
"Have another look. You still can't. In most places, with only a minimum of effort, large portions of your meal can and will be vegan.
"So, be good to yourself, be good to the planet and go largely vegan today."
