Thousands treated for sunstroke as nation wilts
THE nation roasted in the blistering sun yesterday as thousands flocked to beaches and parks to soak up the rays.
At Glastonbury alone, medics treated more than 2,000 of the 140,000 festival-goers for sunstroke and dehydration and organisers handed out free water as others struggled to cool down.
At Wimbledon scores of tennis fans were taken ill with the heat.
By 2pm, the temperature had hit a high of 83.5F (28.6C) at Charlwood in Surrey, although western areas and Wales were experiencing cooler weather.
Forecasters said the mercury would rise again to 86F (30C) today, prompting bookmakers to set odds of Britain having a record-breaking hot summer.
The hottest day of the year until yesterday had been May 24, when temperatures reached 84F (28.8C) at Heathrow and the Olympic Park in east London.
