Japan, China and Russia reject bid to save sharks
THIS incredible shark will be turning heads – even if it does not have to turn its own to get a view of its undersea domain.
The arrival of Britain’s first pair of scalloped hammerhead sharks last week at the Sea Life Centre, Birmingham, was supposed to herald a new age for this highly persecuted creature.
Millions of sharks are killed every year to feed the fin soup industry of the Far East. But a UN‑backed proposal for trade safeguards to protect them and other endangered sharks was defeated by Japan, China and Russia.
A spokesman for The Shark Trust said yesterday: “The decision to reject trade safeguards is deeply disappointing.”
