Burglars are going for fridges
FORGET cash and jewellery. Credit-crunched burglars are stealing fridges and other kitchen appliances.
According to one insurance company, 50 vacuum cleaners, 26 microwaves, 16 toasters, 15 kettles, 13 tumble dryers and 10 fridges were stolen from customers’ homes between March and August this year.
Six dishwashers, three electric toothbrushes, two hair removers and one beard trimmer also ended up as swag.
Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, said: “While most people would go to the likes of Argos or John Lewis for their appliances, thieves seem to be using the recession to do their shopping in other people’s homes.
“Maintaining security for everyday items is just as important as for special and expensive pieces, since you can’t hide a washing machine under your bed.”
