A LEICESTER resident has warned many people are not wearing face coverings despite the city being in a local lockdown.

The caller introduced as Sonia from Leicester told LBC's Tom Swarbrick she has suffered abuse from members of the public for asking them to wear a face covering. The Leicester resident outlined some Britons are unlikely to uniformly wear face coverings whilst shopping, based on her personal experience in the local coronavirus lockdown.

Sonia said: "I work in a bank and we're still having issues and we're still getting abuse from people when we ask them to wear a mask.

“The abuse is quite severe where we have to actually call the police and call 999."

She added: “They start swearing, using very foul language, sometimes racial abuse if they don't want to wear it.

“We're in Leicester and we're in a local lockdown.

“If people are still questioning why to wear masks in Leicester, how's it going to work in the rest of the country that have actually come out of lockdown now?"

Mr Swarbrick replied: "People feel incredibly emotional about this issue of wearing masks it strikes me.

"The people that are on the other side of this argument that feel it is not necessary at all."

The UK was placed in lockdown in March to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed from the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Leicester was placed into lockdown on June 29 2020 following a surge of COVID-19 cases in the city.

At the time of writing, Britain has the tenth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. 

The UK has more than 291,000 cases in total at the time of writing.

The death toll in Britain is currently over 44,000.
