Sunny outlook for shops
SUNNY weather helped to provide a much-needed boost to retailers in Scotland, new figures have revealed.
Shoppers snapping up salads and barbecue food to take advantage of the sun helped to boost like-for-like sales by 2.2 per cent during June.
The figures, published by the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC), follow a dismal performance in May, when sales in Scotland suffered their biggest drop in nine years.
But Richard Dodd, of the SRC, warned: “This is no spending free-for-all. Fundamentally people are still unsure about jobs and their own personal finances.
“Customers are largely holding back from buying more expensive non-essentials .”
Total sales in June were 6.6 per cent higher than 12 months previously and were 2.2 per cent higher on a like-for-like basis, after factors such as new store openings and closures were taken out.
