Tastes in food split the nation
WHEN it comes to healthy eating, Britain still has a clear North-South divide, figures showed yesterday.
Those in London and the South-east spend the highest proportion of their shopping bill on fruit and vegetables, making them the healthiest regions, a study revealed.
But shoppers in the North-east and Scotland come bottom of the league table.
The average British household spends £470 a year on fruit and vegetables and £147 on unhealthy snack food.
But London households spend, on average, £523 on fruit and veg and £124 on unhealthy snacks.
Those in the North-east have the least healthy shopping baskets, according to price-comparison website mysupermarket.co.uk. They spend £403 on fruit and veg – lowest in the UK. Scots spend the second lowest amount at £418.
