The actor – who played Peter Beale in the BBC soap – made his final appearance on EastEnders in February this year, before leaving to explore work in the film industry.
Since his departure from the show, he has been continuously linked with the X-Men franchise, with one rumour reporting he was in the running to play Cyclops.
More recently, the former soap star has been reported to be in talks for the part of Angel, which has now been confirmed.
"Ben Hardy is Angel - I shall confirm it for you!" the director told Empire, before alluding that Hardy's character may be joining the forces of evil.
"But he's not a very nice Angel! And that's all I'll say," he added.
