Millions of Americans flocked to the darkest path of totality where the moon completely blocked out the sun yesterday.
The eclipse first reached Oregon on the West Coast before moving across a dozen states to South Carolina on the East Coast.

In order to photograph the solar eclipse yourself, you needed to use a solar filter to protect your camera by reducing the brightness of the sun.
But you did not need a solar filter if you only took a photograph at the moment that the sun was blocked by the moon.
At that instant, the faint corona was not be visible if you kept the solar filter on your camera.

A leading eclipse website, called Mr Eclipse, says that the most specular moment of the eclipse is the totality when the moon obscures the sun.
It adds: “For a few brief minutes or seconds, the Sun’s pearly white corona, red prominences, and chromosphere are visible.
“The great challenge is to obtain a set of photographs that captures these fleeting phenomena.
“The most important point to remember is that during the total phase, all solar filters must be removed.”
