However, it is Sedgefield that will draw the most attention if the Tories take it and will be seen as a symbol of the end of New Labour.

Phil Wilson won Sedgefield in the 2007 by-election, held after the departure of Tony Blair, and will defend his 6,843 majority.

Dehenna, aged only three when Blair came to power, said: “There does seem to be a complete lack of faith in the Labour Party and its London leadership.

“Because, of course, it’s not just Jeremy Corbyn but most of the shadow cabinet who are based there, which doesn’t resonate too well in the north.”
She added: “There is also incredible support for Theresa May who is showing such strong leadership, exactly what we need in the Brexit negotiations.”
