Tory election pledge to crack down on illegal traveller camps
THE Tories will seek to speed up evictions of illegal traveller camps if they win the general election, Justice Secretary Chris Grayling indicated yesterday.
Chris Grayling indicated that Tories planned to crack down on illegal traveller camps
He said he had spoken to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and said that both thought it an issue that “requires attention” early in the next parliament.
Mr Grayling was responding to a question from Tory MP Tim Loughton, a former children’s minister.
He raised the possibility of appointing specialist magistrates to sit at short notice and out of hours to speed up the eviction process.
In his reply, Mr Grayling said: “We have had a discussion about the traveller issue.
“It’s an area we both feel strongly about and it’s one which I think requires attention as soon as we get a Conservative government re-elected after the election.”
