I'm worth less than £20m, insists former PM Tony Blair
FORMER Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday laughed off suggestions he has amassed a £100million fortune since leaving office.
Mr Blair, who has worked for international banks, advised foreign governments and given a series of money-spinning lectures, claims he is worth less than £20million.
But his property portfolio is thought to be worth £20million alone.
Mr Blair was asked about his wealth after giving a speech in London to mark 20 years since being elected Labour leader. Friends and foes alike have criticised his money-making activities. Former Home Secretary Charles Clarke said it has “damaged his reputation”.
Reports of my wealth are greatly exaggerated. I read I’m supposed to be worth £100million – Cherie’s kind of asked me where it is. I’m not worth a fifth of that
Figures showed he was able to deposit £13million in the bank last year.
In the financial year to April 2013, Mr Blair made almost £2million from one business he owns and a further £7million from shares in two other companies.
Yet he said: “Reports of my wealth are greatly exaggerated. I read I’m supposed to be worth £100million – Cherie’s kind of asked me where it is. I’m not worth a fifth of that.”
