Boris Johnson asked about political comeback

Boris Johnson has hinted he could make a sensational political comeback.

The former Conservative prime minister has been at the centre of ongoing speculation since he was forced out of No 10 two years ago.

But do you think Mr Johnson should return to frontline politics? Vote in our poll below and let us know more in the comments section.

In his latest hint as he promotes his new memoir Unleashed, the ex-premier suggested he could return if he thought he could be "useful".

He initially said his chances of becoming Tory leader again were “about as good as being blinded by a champagne cork [or] decapitated by a frisbee”.

But when pressed, Mr Johnson added: “The real answer is what Her Maj the Queen said, and I can say that without breaching any confidence: you should only do things if you think you can be useful.”

Asked if he meant he could no longer be useful, he said: “I’m not saying that.”

Mr Johnson went on: “For politicians to be effective, they must be like wasps in a jam jar. They’ve got to want continually, cockroach-like to survive and to continue.

“That’s not necessarily a despicable thing from the point of view of the electorate, because we all need people who really, really want to do their best for us.”

It comes as Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick are the final two in the Tory leadership race to succeed Rishi Sunak following the party's general election defeat.

Mr Johnson, who led the Tories to a landslide victory at the 2019 election, was pushed out of 10 Downing Street in 2022 following a series of scandals.

He went on to quit as Uxbridge and South Ruislip's MP last year after a "witch hunt" investigation into Partygate.

But the Tory big beast vowed "I'll be back" in a direct message to loyal Daily Express readers.
