Sir Keir Starmer enjoyed a major wardrobe upgrade after being given a £16,200 gift of clothes by a rich Labour donor.

The 61-year-old received the donation worth thousands of pounds from former ASOS chairman Lord Waheed Alli as the Labour leader tried to show the country he looked the part of PM.

The latest update to the Register of Members’ Financial Interests showed Lord Alli's donation for “work clothing” was received on April 17, roughly a month before Rishi Sunak called the snap General Election.

It was followed shortly afterward by another donation-in-kind from Lord Alli, this time for “multiple pairs of glasses” valued at £2,485 in total, on April 29.

Before the election, Mr Sunak received the most attention for his expensive taste in clothes.

During his failed Tory leadership campaign against Liz Truss, former culture secretary Nadine Dorries slammed him for wearing a Henry Herbert suit that reportedly cost £3,500 and £490 Prada loafers.

And in a sign that money doesn’t always buy you style, the ex-PM was widely panned for wearing £90 Adidas Samba shoes with a suit – usually a fashion no-no.

He later apologised for the faux-pas but said he had been a long-time wearer of the sports shoes.

While Sir Keir talked of his working-class background during the General Election campaign, Lord Alli’s donation appears to show the PM has undergone something of a glow-up.

During one election visit, the Labour leader wore a Sandro Orion jacket, with a detachable hood, reportedly worth more than £500.

The Register of Members’ Financial Interests for 2023-24 also shows that Sir Keir received several freebies to football matches, including five tickets with hospitality to Arsenal vs Porto on March 12 – a gift worth £3,000.

On June 3 last year, he was also given a private box for four people at Epsom Downs Racecourse, including catering. That was worth £3,716.

Lord Alli has been a Labour life peer in the House of Lords since 1998 and has donated thousands of pounds to the party.

The Register of Members’ Financial Interests for 2023-24 shows he also gave Sir Keir a total of £16,000 for the then-leader of the opposition’s private office.

Lord Alli is a lifelong entrepreneur with several business successes, including as co-creator of the reality television series Survivor.

He later set up Silvergate Media and stood down as its chief executive in 2022.
