We are sleepwalking into a nightmare of small boats crossings this summer.

Shadow Home Secretary James Cleverly warns that the small boats crisis is going to get much worse now that Labour have scrapped the Rwanda deterrent.

The small boats coming across the channel are not a small issue. It is a threat to our security, our economy and our public services.

But Yvette Cooper has no plan to deal with this issue other than crossing her fingers and hoping for bad weather.

In fact, everything she has done so far has increased the appeal of illegally crossing the channel in a small boat.

Things are only going to get worse under Labour.

They cancelled the Rwanda plan on day one, meaning there is no longer any deterrent stopping people from making the crossing in the first place.

This was the final piece in the jigsaw to break the business model of people smuggling gangs. But it was binned straight away.

We made clear that if you came here illegally, you would not be able to stay.

But Yvette Cooper has undermined this already by announcing an effective amnesty for 90,000 illegal arrivals.

This has already made Britain a magnet for migrants the world over.

People now know if they come across in a small boat they will be welcomed with open arms.

Why would you want to encourage people to risk their lives leaving a safe and prosperous European nation? It makes no sense.

Labour has started the long march back to the European Union too, with a migration deal the first thing on the table.

The last thing hardworking Brits need is more migrants. But this is a price Labour are all too happy for us to pay for their long-held desire to be back in the EU.

We were making good progress on cutting immigration. Illegal arrivals down a third last year, set to come down even more once we got the Rwanda flights off the ground.

And visa numbers down by 48 per cent this year because of the difficult decisions we took.

The thank you note is yet to arrive as many in Labour opposed these measures, and they clearly don’t want to get numbers down more.

Already, there have been more than 2,000 small boat arrivals since Labour won the election.

This is only going to get worse.

People should not be able to pay thousands of pounds to jump the queue of our points-based immigration system. It challenges the very heart of Britishness.

They should not risk their lives in the channel and be granted an amnesty to encourage others to do the same. Everyone loses out.

We are sleepwalking into a nightmare of small boats crossings this summer.

Labour need to wake up and smell the coffee before it is too late.
