Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer has been forced to issue an apology after a generous statement about Joe Biden yesterday sparked outrage among hard-left party members.

Reacting to Mr Biden’s news that he won’t contest the next election for the Democrats, Ms Denyer tweeted that she wished Mr Biden “well” and thanked him for “his many years of public service”.

She added that while it wouldn’t have been an easy decision for him, it was a “true sign of leadership”.

While the statement wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow with most voters, many hard-left Green Party members reacted with fury to Ms Denyer’s compliments to the President.

Green Party election candidate Adam Pugh furiously spat: “For the record, Carla doesn’t speak for me and she doesn’t speak for a huge chunk of the Green Party. This is a horrendously bad take.”

Green councillor Joe Lever added: “We don’t need to say these things.”

Owen Jones demanded that the Green leader retract her “tone-deaf statement” owning to his claim that Joe Biden has “facilitated the mass slaughter of innocent people”.

Amid laughter from onlookers at the left-wing party descending into in-fighting, this afternoon Carla Denyer was forced into issuing an apology for her statement yesterday.

In a follow-up statement this afternoon, Ms Denyer said: “For decades successive US Governments have supported the Israeli government’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land, and Biden is complicit in the slaughter of innocent people in Gaza.

“Last night I was positive about President Biden's decision to stand aside as a candidate. Some people read into this that I was offering my unmitigated support for his Presidency, including the policy of selling arms to Israel.

“Given my long-running work campaigning for peace, this is the last thing I wanted and certainly not my position.

“I am sorry for not making it clearer, and that my comments left some in doubt and concerned.”

Responding to yesterday’s hard-left fury at the Green leader’s initial statement, Labour member Matt warned that the replies to her tweet “should be an eye opener for the Greens”.

He added: “If they don’t act now, they’ll lose their party to a parasitic mob.”

Another user issued the same warning: “Greens are going to end up with crank left entryist leadership before long & the likes of Denyer & Polanski will wonder what happened to their party…”

User Tomos Doran said he felt “really sorry” for the leader, however, adding: “She clearly went into politics for the right reasons, and is only now learning, courtesy of the truly unhinged reactions to this tweet, what a clown car s***show of a party she's hitched herself to. She should just switch to Labour.”

Telegraph columnist Madeline Grant joked: “Enjoying this sort of breathtaking pomposity from British MPs.

“The idea that a man who struggles with basic facts about his own life and career would have any idea who or what Carla Denyer is, is hilarious.”
