Sir Keir Starmer has insited the UK will be “very much part of Europe” under a Labour government.

The Prime Minister made the remark while ending his opening remarks at a summit of the European Political Community at Blenheim Palace.

Speaking to European leaders in attendance, he said: “Britain will be a friend and a partner, ready to work with you. Not part of the European Union but very much part of Europe.”

Sir Keir told the summit that his Government wanted to “work with all of you to reset relationships”.

He said that task was urgent because “our security is on the line”.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, was sitting beside next Sir Keir at the event.

Sir Keir told him that the UK will support Ukraine “for as long as it takes”.

He said the threat posed by Russia “reaches right across Europe”.

The Prime Minister warned attendees that a “new storm” was gathering over the continent.

Welcoming his counterparts, he added: “It [Blenheim Palace] is of course the birth place of Winston Churchill and we stand for the values that he embodied around the world: liberty and democracy, yes of course, but also defiance and resolve in their defence.

“And today as a new storm gathers over our continent we choose to meet it in that same spirit and we choose to meet it together.”
