Keir Starmer said he wants to "reset" relations with Brussels after Joe Biden called for the UK to have closer ties with the European Union.

In their first face-to-face talks, held in the Oval Office, the US President said Britain is the "knot" tying the transatlantic alliance together.

He urged the new Prime Minister to return the country to being America’s point man for the European Union.

President Biden said: “I kind of see you guys as the knot tying the transatlantic alliance together, the closer you are with Europe. We know where you are, you know where we are.”

Sir Keir has used the Nato summit to start his plan to soften Brexit arrangements.

He met Estonian premier Kaja Kallas, who is about to become the European Union’s new chief diplomat, on the sidelines of the Nato summit.

He told GB News: “I've been clear with international leaders here that we do want to reset the relationship with each individual countries, whether they're EU or not, but more broadly, and of course this being a Nato summit, Nato is the cornerstone of our defence in Europe, working with European allies on defence has never been more important than it is at the moment.”

The two leaders met for talks for the first time as pressure mounted on Mr Biden to quit over his health.

Sir Keir was asked if he believed the US president was “senile” and replied “no”.

“We had a really good bilateral, we were billed for 45 minutes, we went on for the best part of an hour, we went through a huge number of issues. At pace, he was actually on really good form,” he told the BBC.

The trip to the White House came less than a week from Sir Keir’s election victory and during his debut on the international leaders’ summit circuit.

Sir Keir told the president: “The special relationship is so important. It’s forged in difficult circumstances, endured for so long, and stronger now than ever.

“I’m very pleased to be able to come so early in government to recommit to Nato, to recommit to the special relationship and to discuss these affairs with you.”
