Moment car 'crashes' into Downing Street gates
Video footage has captured the moment a car smashed into the front gates of Downing Street. The silver car can be seen slowing down briefly before lurching towards the home of Rishi Sunak and his family.
Despite the relatively slow speed of the crash, people could be seen fleeing the area and a substantial police presence now covers the area.
Police set up a cordon in Whitehall, the main road running past Downing Street, as officers with sniffer dogs were seen outside the gates.
There are no reports of any injuries and inquiries are ongoing.
One person has been arrested following the collision, which occurred at 4.20pm, police said.
The prime minister was in Downing Street at the time of the crash, but is understood to have since left for a scheduled visit.
In a statement, the Met said: "At around 4.20pm a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall.
"Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.
"There are no reports of any injuries. Inquiries are ongoing."
Witness Simon Parry, 44, said: "I heard a bang and looked up and saw loads of police with taser guns shouting at the man.
"A lot of police vehicles came very quickly and were very quick to evacuate the area."
He said the driver had his "face to the floor" as he was being arrested.
He said the man appeared to slow down before he reached the gates of Downing Street, having driven out from the other side of the road.
He added: "There were sniffer dogs and a bomb squad."
