'Buried Queen, pound and Conservatives': Ex French PM slams Truss 44-day premiership
Liz Truss took a massive swipe from a former French Prime Minister who said she destroyed all aspects of British society under her 44-day premiership.
Liz Truss slammed for 'burying Queen and pound' by Villepin
Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin took a pointed dig at Liz Truss over her disastrous 44-day premiership, as the now former Prime Minister gave her final address outside Downing Street. Liz Truss wished success to her successor and former leadership rival Rishi Sunak and called on him to be bold in lowering taxes - the economic policy that precipitated her demise. Mr De Villepin called her policy ideas reckless mistakes that signal an urgent need to go back to serious British politics and resolve the Brexit issues.
Speaking to French radio France Inter, the former French Prime Minister delivered a devastating salvo to former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
He said: "Comedians are having a field day in the UK today.
"In 40 days, Liz Truss has managed to bury the Queen, bury the pound and bury the Tory party.
"That is to say, she is paying a bill that is beyond her."
Mr De Villepin said: "But it shows, and it's a lesson for us too, that there are no shortcuts when you do something stupid.
"You have to be lucid enough to see the mistakes, the errors that are made and try to repair them.
"And it's all very well to turn around and do a scalp dance like Liz Truss' predecessor, Boris Johnson. At some point, you have to pay the bill."
France Inter's radio host Nicola Demorand jumped in, saying: "And to say, Brexit was a mistake, full stop."

Mr De Villepin agreed with the assessment, suggesting the UK's economy will not grow until it is involved in the "globalised" economy and with the European Union.
He said: "Brexit was a mistake and now it's about making the best of it.
"That is, to come back to the realities, the hard realities of a globalised world where you have to try to find your best place.
"I'm sure that the United Kingdom, which has a lot of assets, will be able to bounce back, but only if they open their eyes - there is no point in running away."
