POLITICIAN Giulio Andreotti held every major office of state in Italy, including serving as prime minister seven times.
However, he is also likely to be remembered as having been acquitted in 1999, aged 80, of conspiracy to murder a journalist and having been the Mafia’s chief political “godfather” in Rome.
Andreotti was born in Rome.
After taking a law degree and leading the Catholic student movement, he entered politics, serving in numerous coalition governments and becoming prime minister for the first time in 1972.
He married Livia Danese in 1945 with whom he had two sons and two daughters
In 1978 his political rival Aldo Moro was kidnapped and murdered by the far-Left Red Brigades terrorist group.
