Pet Survivor of the Year: Bulldog who suffered horror burns enters prestigious award
A COURAGEOUS bulldog is the first entry for a leading animal heroes’ award after enduring nightmares from suffering horrific burns in a fire.
Harrowing footage showing the intense and delicate treatment two year old Leo faced in the aftermath of the blaze highlights how he is a born survivor.
Leo is named today as the first entry in the prestigious PDSA’s Pet Survivor Award which recognises the incredible way animals recover from injury or illness through the skills of veterinary professionals.
The veterinary team at Bournemouth PDSA Pet Hospital provided daily care for Leo, changing his dressings and cleaning his wounds, after he was almost killed in a blaze last year.
Weeks of treatment and recovery saw Leo defying the odds to make a full recovery, with hopes of now following Darcy the spaniel who was awarded last year’s PDSA title.
Spaniel Darcy has made a remarkable recovery after jumping over a wall and plunging 60ft down the concrete slipway of Highlands dam.
She suffered a ruptured spleen and fractured her pelvis, hip joint and both a front and back leg but managed to pull through after a series of operations and rehabilitation under the watchful eye of Parkside Vets in Dundee.
Announcing this year’s awards, PDSA vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan said: “Every day, dedicated vet teams save lives and help get our beloved pets back on their paws after serious injury and illness.
“The PDSA Pet Survivor Awards recognise those extraordinary stories which capture a pet’s fighting spirit, their owner’s dedication and the expertise and skills of the vets and vet nurses involved.
“We welcome entries about death-defying stories of bravery and determination, to recognise the important place our pets have in our lives.”
The winner will be decided by a public vote later in the year.
