The RSPCA is desperate to find the brown bull terrier to check on its wellbeing after film emerged of the animal being forced to sit by being hit several times.
Describing the man's behaviour as "completely unacceptable", the animal welfare charity is appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact its confidential hotline on 0300 123 8018.
The RSPCA has been passed footage filmed outside a supermarket in Holloway, north London, on Monday, August 15, after witnesses claim they saw the man hitting the dog on the back, then stamp on the animal's tail and also twist its ear.

Film shows the man in a bright blue t-shirt, navy jeans and with short, dark hair holding the medium size terrier on a lead.
It cowers as the man repeatedly hits it on the back to make it sit.
RSPCA inspector Clare Dew, who is appealing for information, said: "We received a call and have been sent footage showing a man repeatedly punching a dog in the back, trying to get him to sit down, outside the Coop supermarket on Benwell Road in Holloway around midday on Monday.

"This behaviour is completely unacceptable, the dog is clearly frightened of the man who is attempting to get him to sit while he waits outside the shop.
"I'm keen to speak with the man as soon as possible and check on the welfare this dog and make sure he is alright."
