‘Sweet wrapper’ was actually a £38k diamond ring
A metal detectorist who mistook a diamond ring for a sweet wrapper celebrated after it sold for £38,000.
David Board with the diamond ring he discovered
David Board found it in a farmer pal’s field. Even after the ex-tanker driver brushed off the dirt he thought the gold item “might make £20 as scrap”.
But the Local Finds Officer said it was given by Somerset’s largest landowner Sir Thomas Brook to Lady Joan as they wed in 1388.
The twin bands are inscribed “As I hold your faith, hold mine”, in medieval French.
Mr Board, 69, will split the cash from the sale at Noonans of Mayfair with Patrick Tolley of Thorncombe, Dorset. He said: “I am amazed it sold for so much.”
