October 5 - On this day: 86 years since the Battle of Cable Street
86 years ago (1936) We reported that a march by Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists in Whitechapel, east London had to be called off after clashes between the police and anti-fascist protesters turned violent.
Police on horseback charged the 100,000-strong crowd of demonstrators, including trade unionists, socialists, anarchists, Jews and Irish dockers in what would become known as the Battle of Cable Street.
48 years ago (1974) Five people died, including four soldiers returning from tours of Northern Ireland, when the IRA bombed two pubs in Guildford.
In 1975 four people were found guilty of the attack, but in 1989 their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal which found them unsafe.
28 years ago (1994) Some 53 members of a doomsday cult committed suicide or were murdered at remote villages in western Switzerland, including its founders Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret.
Members of the Order Of The Solar Temple sect were also believed to be involved in money laundering and arms trafficking.
