21 years ago (2001) since our front page reported on the news that teenage mothers would be given free full-time childminders if they went back to school.
Under the controversial proposals, children would be looked after by specially trained professionals during the day while their schoolgirl mums went back into education and training and also got advice on bringing up their babies.
50 years ago (1972)
An IRA car bomb outside Aldershot barracks in Hampshire killed seven and injured 19.
The 280lb device targeted the headquarters of the British Army’s 16th Parachute Brigade but those who died were all civilians, mainly cleaning ladies.
25 years ago (1997)
Scientists at Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute revealed the creation of Dolly the Sheep, the world’s first successfully cloned mammal.
Dolly’s arrival infuriated animal rights organisations while the Church of Scotland expressed reservations about the process.
Dolly was eventually put down in 2003 after she developed a progressive lung disease.
