February 17 – On this day: 89 years since the attempted assassination of FD Roosevelt
89 years ago (1933) Our front page reported the attempted assassination of US President elect Franklin D Roosevelt who was shot at six times by Italian-American "anarchist" Giuseppe Zangara in Miami, Florida.
He was only saved by "the presence of mind" of a woman in the crowd who deflected the gunman's aim. Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak died in the attack while four others were injured, including two women.
44 years ago (1978) An IRA bomb at La Mon restaurant in Belfast killed 12 and injured 30 in one of the worst atrocities of the Troubles.
The large incendiary device contained a napalm-like substance, creating a huge fireball.
The IRA claimed it had tried to send a warning but the hotel received the phone call just moments before the explosion.
26 years ago (1996) The world chess champion Garry Kasparov beat Deep Blue in the second of six matches against the IBM super-computer in Philadelphia, USA.
Kasparov lost the first match, won three and drew two of the games which attracted worldwide attention.
