Facebook accounts can be deactivated temporarily whenever and for however long a user wishes.
While your profile won’t be deleted, it won’t be visible to other Facebook users and people won’t be able to search for you.
Some information – including messages you have sent – may still be visible while your profile is deactivated.
To deactivate Facebook. follow these simple steps:
- Click the downward arrow at the top right hand corner of any Facebook page.
- Select “Settings”.
- Click “Security” in the left column.
- Choose “Deactivate your account”, then follow the steps to confirm.
To reactivate Facebook, simply log in with your email and password.

How to permanently delete Facebook
Once a Facebook profile has been deleted it is unretrievable – meaning all photos, videos and other information will be lost.
However, Facebook offers an option to download a copy of your data before choosing to delete.
- Click the downward arrow at the top right hand corner of any Facebook page.
- Select “Settings”.
- Click “Download a copy of your Facebook data” at the bottom of the main menu.
Users can download their profile data before permanently deleting
After doing this, go to facebook.com/help/delete_account and click on “Delete my account” to permanently get rid of your profile.
It may take up to 90 days for Facebook to delete all profile data, but information will be inaccessible during this time.
