Soaring temperatures can have a negative effect on sleep quality, particularly in many UK homes which are not able to cope when the heat rises. Many of us find ourselves tossing and turning throughout the night as we desperately attempt to keep cool.

Numerous solutions exist to help bring bedroom temperatures down, from fans to open windows. Yet one cleaning expert has an unconventional trick that she claims will cool things down during a spell of hot weather. Lynsey Crombie, who regularly shares her household hints and tips on social media and This Morning, does a 15-minute task before bed to ensure a "lovely cool night's sleep" without the need for a noisy fan.

The Queen of Clean revealed that she simply places a white sheet inside a large zip lock bag. Lynsey then puts it in her freezer for 15 minutes until it is chilled.

She said: "Struggling with the heat at night? Then I have got a really simple hack for you.

"This is a white cotton sheet that I have put into a zipped bag. It's a double sheet, perfect for keeping cool. Then just take that to your freezer and pop it in."

Lynsey advises that the sheet needs to remain in the freezer for 15-minutes before bedtime. She added: "When you get into bed later with your nice cotton sheet it will be lovely and cool."

Her followers were eager to try out the hack, with one saying: "Yes Lyndsey this is fab." Another added: "Brilliant tip - the nights are so warm aren't they."

Someone else commented: "Ooh have to try this xx." Another unconventional method for staying cool on warm nights is to hang a damp towel or sheet beside an open window.

John Lawless from Best Heating said: " If you open a window and hang a damp towel or sheet in front of it that has been soaked in cold water, it can cool the room down.

"This is because the warm air will have to pass through the sheet and turn it into cold air before it enters the room."

During daylight hours, sunlight warms up the air near windows which then becomes trapped inside a room, and when you close your curtains at night, all that heat remains locked in.

The towel method is effective because water requires energy to evaporate, drawing that energy from any warmth in the surrounding air.

Moisture from a damp towel extracts heat from the air near a window before it enters your property, helping to cool your bedroom and enabling you to experience a more peaceful night's rest.
