The countdown to Christmas is on with just 6 days until the big day. Households across the UK would no doubt be planning their festive shopping trip this weekend and finishing up some last-minute errands.

So if you're in charge of Christmas dinner this year, there's one step to make sure you complete this year and it has nothing to do with your food prep.

According to one DIY expert, you need to double check your oven before you start cooking up that festive feast. The TikTok user, known as @fixitwithfraz to his 14,500 followers, shared the advice to avoid any issues with your oven on December 25.

He said: "Do this simple test that anyone can do while there's still time to get it sorted before Christmas.

"If you're hosting Christmas and you're going to be cooking for more people than you're normally used to cooking for, chances are you're going to be using parts of your oven or cooker that you don't normally use."

He claimed how there's parts of your oven which might be a little bit rusty, especially when they haven't been used enough.

But you can act now to avoid any issues on Christmas Day itself.

The DIY guru added: "The elements can go bad so just because they're not used, it doesn't mean they're going to be okay.

"So make sure you're turning the functions on, that you don't normally use which you know you're going to be using for Christmas to make sure they're working."

However, if you think all it takes is switching it on the 'feel the heat', that's where you're wrong.

He continued: "Leave them on for a good 20 minutes, half an hour, because sometimes the problem can come when the elements get really hot.

"It goes for your hob as well, if you normally use the same ring every time or the same couple of rings, get the others fired up whichever ones you don't normally use, get the heat coming through. Make sure they're working okay."

The DIY man concluded: "It may even be something you can fix yourself."

How to check your oven is working properly:

Power/gas: Check if the oven lights up or displays numbers (electric) and if the gas supply is on.

Preheat: Set to a standard temperature like 175°C and see if the oven starts heating and the indicator light turns off (if it has one).

Heat: After 15-20 mins, carefully place an oven thermometer inside which should read close to the set temperature after another 20 mins.
