The whole point of a washing machine is that it leaves your clothes smelling nice and fresh. But often, your trusty appliance begins letting off a foul stench itself.

It's very important you give your machine a good clean every once in a while by scrubbing the compartments and putting it on a rinse cycle. Now one man revealed how to stop your washing machine from smelling badly by completing one easy task.

The TikTok user, known as @fixitwithfraz, boasts 13,500 followers where he shares his DIY fixes and hacks. And just recently, he revealed in a clip, which garnered 10,500 likes, how boiling water can help flush out any bad smells.

"If you still have a smelly washing machine that you can't just sort out even though you've run multiple hot washes, multiple cleaners through it," he said. "You might be this one step away from making it so much better. Let me show you."

He showed how water is delivered in the washing machine and goes through the pipe where it is then heated in the drum.

He continued: "So the water that runs through that pipe is never heated, it's always cold and bits of detergent can get left behind in that pipe and get really really smelly.

"So boil your kettle and give it a good flush through. Just open the drawer and just pour it through the various sections, give it all a good swish and that boiling water will go through that pipe and clear out loads of that detergent."

The man told how people would be so amazed how many times this works by leaving the appliance with a fresh smell.

In terms of how often it should be done, he added: "I'd advise to do this a few times just to give it a good flush out. But what you will end up with is a puddle of hot water in the drum so just be sure to pop the machine on a drain or draining spin.

"So I know I can guarantee that's going to sort out your smelly washing machine but if you're at your wit's end, you might as well give it a try because that pipe never gets any heat through it so it can really build up and get a bit gunky."

How to keep a washing machine smelling fresh:

  • Leave the door and detergent drawer open between washes to air it out
  • Run a monthly hot cycle with vinegar, baking soda or washing machine cleaner to eliminate build-up and odours
  • Regularly wipe down the rubber seal
  • Clean the filter
  • Use the correct amount of detergent

It's also very important to take clothes out of the machine as soon as the cycle is finished to prevent mildew from setting in.
