Avoid 1 common washing machine mistake if you want to prevent mould and mildew
Common mistakes will have your washing machine leaving a residual stench on your clothing.

There’s few things worse than taking your freshly washed clothes out of the wahsing machine only to find them grubbier than they went in and reeking of mildew. However, it’s a common issue and there may be things you are doing wrong to make it happen.
According to Cookology founder and kitchen appliance expert Andrew Wright, many Brits are guilty of not properly caring for their machine. These common errors most of us are guilty of can lead to mildew and odour. He said one of the most common mistakes is leaving the machine shut tight constantly.

Andrew said: “When the wash is done, many people immediately shut the door and detergent drawer – creating a perfect damp breeding ground for mould and bad smells. Always leave the door and drawer slightly ajar to allow air circulation and prevent mildew.”
Ignoring your washing machine filter is another surefire way to breed bad smells.
Andrew said: “Most people forget the machine even has a filter, but it’s essential. Lint, coins, hair grips and other debris build up and can cause drainage problems, foul smells or even flooding.”
To stop this problem make sure you check and clean the filter, which is usually at the bottom of the machine on the front, every four to six weeks.
The third common problem that almost everyone is guilty of is overloading the machine.
Stuffing in too many clothes restricts water and detergent flow, meaning your laundry won’t come out clean, and your machine has to work much harder to spin, causing wear on the motor and bearings.
For a standard wash you should aim to have the drum around 75% full, and be able to comfortably fit your hand on top of the washing in the machine.
Andrew said: “Washing machines are built to last 10-plus years, but only if you treat them well. A few simple habits can help avoid breakdowns and keep your laundry fresh, clean and smelling great.”
